What changes after wisdom-tooth surgery?
A 2019 review of six randomized trials found less pain during the first day and at one week, but no clear improvement in facial swelling or restricted mouth opening. Another six-trial review found less swelling and pain at day seven, but not early pain relief. Swelling results therefore differ between reviews. 1 2
What did the newer trial add?
A 2024 Italian trial assigned 42 people having a lower wisdom tooth removed to purified bromelain, a standardized pineapple extract or placebo for seven days. Both active groups used less ibuprofen and had less pain and swelling. This small study supports further investigation of those preparations, rather than a claim about recovery from every operation. 3
What about sinus symptoms and other conditions?
NCCIH considers the evidence insufficient to recommend oral bromelain for sinusitis. Studies of other conditions often combine it with additional ingredients, making its own contribution difficult to determine. 4
