Cellulase
Cellulase is a group of enzymes that break down cellulose, the main fiber in plant cell walls. Humans do not make it; supplement cellulase usually comes from fungi.
A promising result for a blend
A 40-person trial in functional dyspepsia, persistent upper-abdominal symptoms, tested a five-enzyme blend containing cellulase, amylase, protease, lactase and lipase. At 50 mg three times daily for 60 days, symptom scores improved versus placebo. The authors worked for the manufacturer. 1
Which ingredient helped?
A narrative review found encouraging results for mixed enzymes in meal-related digestive symptoms. However, the trials did not separate the contributions of individual enzymes. Whether cellulase itself improves bloating remains an open question, not a finding of no effect. 2
