Cellulase
Cellulase is a group of enzymes that break down cellulose, the main fiber in plant cell walls. Humans do not make it; supplement cellulase usually comes from fungi.
What it is studied for
The strongest rated effects first. Bars show the size of the effect, the letter grades the evidence, and each rating lists the studies behind it.
What does cellulase do?
Cellulase cuts bonds in cellulose and related carbohydrates, producing shorter chains. That biochemical action is distinct from demonstrating symptom relief after a meal. 1 2

Questions people ask
Does cellulase digest cellulose?
Yes. It breaks certain bonds in cellulose into shorter chains. 1
Does a positive enzyme-blend trial prove cellulase works?
No. Combination trials cannot identify which ingredient produced a benefit without testing the components separately. 2
Can it treat diarrhea after meals?
Mixed-enzyme research includes meal-related diarrhea, but the review did not establish a cellulase-specific effect. 2
Does EFSA’s opinion mean every supplement is safe?
No. The opinion covers a defined enzyme preparation and specified food-manufacturing uses. 1
