Glucomannan
Glucomannan is a soluble dietary fiber from the root of the konjac plant (Amorphophallus konjac).
A measurable change in cholesterol
A 2017 analysis pooled 12 trials involving 370 adults and children. Glucomannan lowered LDL cholesterol by an average 0.35 mmol/L compared with control. Non-HDL cholesterol also fell, but apolipoprotein B did not improve in the six trials reporting it. These were cholesterol measurements, not evidence of fewer heart attacks. 1
Lower LDL cholesterol in the pooled trials; cardiovascular events were not established. 1
Why do weight-loss claims and trial results differ?
NIH describes inconsistent results, including trials that found no significant weight difference from placebo. EFSA’s favorable assessment concerned overweight adults using at least 3 g daily in three doses before meals, with water and an energy-restricted diet. That context matters when interpreting a claim on a package. 2 3
