Fat
Medium-chain Triglycerides
Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) are fats built from fatty acids with 6 to 12 carbon atoms. They occur in coconut and palm kernel oil, and MCT oil is made from them.

What side effects occur?
A 2026 systematic review of 33 studies found diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and nausea to be the main adverse effects. Some reactions caused treatment withdrawal, especially at higher doses. Long-term tolerance was poorly studied. 1
Can it replace every dietary fat?
MCT oil does not supply essential fatty acids, so it cannot be the sole long-term fat source. 2
