Antioxidants
Antioxidants are substances that neutralize reactive oxygen compounds which can damage cells. Some are made by the body, others such as vitamins C and E come from food.
Does a capsule prevent chronic disease?
Trials do not generally support antioxidant supplements for preventing cancer or cardiovascular disease. The association between fruit and vegetable intake and better health does not isolate antioxidants as the cause. 1
Where is there a specific benefit?
AREDS 2 supplements can slow progression in people with intermediate age-related macular degeneration, or late disease in one eye. They do not prevent early disease from becoming intermediate disease; an eye clinician should assess suitability. 2
Why are antioxidants studied after exercise?
Exercise can connect oxidative stress with muscle damage and inflammation. A research review examined markers such as cytokines and C-reactive protein, alongside dose and timing. This mechanistic rationale is not itself proof of faster recovery. 3
