Fructose

Fructose is a simple sugar found mainly in fruit and honey. Table sugar is half fructose and half glucose.

There is no established safe upper threshold

EFSA could not establish a safe upper intake for dietary sugars and advises keeping added and free sugars as low as possible within a nutritionally adequate diet. This is not a recommendation to eliminate intact fruit. 1

Two different forms of intolerance

Malabsorption can cause bloating, abdominal pain and altered bowel movements. Hereditary fructose intolerance is an inherited metabolic disorder in which fructose can cause low blood sugar and liver or kidney damage. 2
