Lutein
Lutein is a yellow carotenoid pigment found in leafy greens such as kale and spinach and in egg yolk. It collects in the macula, the central part of the retina.
What it is studied for
The strongest rated effects first. Bars show the size of the effect, the letter grades the evidence, and each rating lists the studies behind it.
Does lutein protect your sight?
The useful starting point is whether you have age-related macular degeneration, or AMD. An AREDS2 formula can help slow progression in people with intermediate AMD or advanced disease in one eye. It has not shown benefit for people with early AMD or no AMD, and it is not a way to restore lost vision. 1 2
A pigment with a place in the eye
Lutein and zeaxanthin accumulate in the macula, the central area of the retina responsible for sharp vision. Their light-filtering and antioxidant properties explain the interest in eye health. Lutein is also being studied for cognition and responses to ultraviolet light, but those mechanisms alone cannot tell us whether a supplement changes daily life. 3 4 5

Questions people ask
Can lutein cure macular degeneration?
No. The supported role is slowing progression with a specific combination in selected AMD patients, not curing the condition. 1 2
Is lutein the same as zeaxanthin?
They are different carotenoids. Both occur in eye tissue and are included together in the AREDS2 formula. 1 3
Can I get it from food?
Yes. Green vegetables and egg yolks supply lutein; cooking and some fat in the meal can improve its availability. 2
Does it improve memory?
Small trials offer encouraging results, but pooled adult trial results did not show a significant overall memory improvement. 6
Is lutein a sunscreen pill?
The skin trial measured gene responses after controlled UV exposure. It did not test replacement of sunscreen or establish protection from skin cancer. 5
