Sulforaphane
Sulforaphane is a sulfur compound that forms from glucoraphanin when cruciferous vegetables, especially broccoli sprouts, are chopped or chewed.
Also listed as Broccoli extract
What did a recent human trial find?
A 12-week trial randomized 89 people with prediabetes to broccoli sprout extract providing 150 micromoles of sulforaphane daily or placebo. Fasting glucose fell by 0.2 mmol/L relative to placebo, missing the prespecified 0.3 mmol/L target. Exploratory analyses suggested that metabolism and gut bacteria might help identify responders; this needs confirmation. 1
Microbiome findings concern treatment response, not a proven general improvement in gut health. 1
