Acai
Açaí is a dark purple palm fruit from tropical Central and South America, whose pigments and other plant compounds are studied for antioxidant effects.
Also listed as Açaí, Acai berry, Euterpe oleracea, Acai Extract
What changed in the small metabolic study?
Ten overweight adults ate 100 g of açaí pulp twice daily for a month in an uncontrolled pilot study. Fasting glucose, insulin and total cholesterol fell compared with their starting values. Without a comparison group, the study cannot establish that açaí caused those changes. 1
Which questions remain open?
The same study found no significant improvement in blood pressure, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, an inflammation marker, or exhaled nitric oxide. NCCIH describes preliminary antioxidant findings, including small studies of human antioxidant defenses, while judging clinical benefit uncertain. Changes in these measurements do not establish weight loss or prevention of disease. 1 2
