Agmatine
Agmatine is a compound the body forms from the amino acid arginine. It is mainly studied for its role in nerve signaling.
What did the pain trial find?
In a 2010 trial, 99 people with lumbar disc-related nerve-root pain were randomized to agmatine sulfate or placebo for 14 days. Pain improved more with agmatine, but only 61 participants were analyzed. That substantial attrition limits confidence in this promising result. 1
Does the mood research test a supplement?
A study of 45 adolescents with depression and 44 healthy controls found higher blood agmatine in the depression group, but no correlation with depression scores. This supports studying the pathway; it does not show that taking agmatine treats depression. 2
