What matters in a cocoa extract?

Cocoa flavanols are the compounds behind an EU health claim about maintaining normal blood-vessel dilation. EFSA concluded that 200 mg daily can support this function. That does not establish heart-attack prevention. 1

Questions people ask

Does cocoa extract prevent cardiovascular disease?

COSMOS did not show a statistically significant reduction in its primary cardiovascular outcome. The secondary mortality signal deserves further study. 2

Is more flavanol always better?

EFSA’s assessed daily amount for the vessel-function claim is 200 mg; it does not establish a rule that larger amounts give greater benefits. 1

Can it improve concentration?

The clinic substudy found no overall executive-function/attention benefit. Its diet-related subgroup signals are not yet a dependable prediction of benefit. 3
