Genistein
Genistein is an isoflavone, a plant compound found mainly in soybeans that can bind to estrogen receptors.
Bone density improved in one substantial trial
A trial in 389 postmenopausal women with low bone density tested 54 mg genistein daily for two years. Both groups received calcium and vitamin D. Spine and hip bone density improved with genistein compared with placebo, but fractures were not measured. Better scan results therefore do not establish fracture prevention. 1
What about hot flashes?
A report from the same parent trial examined 236 women who had hot flashes. Symptoms improved more with genistein than placebo by 12 months, with no further reduction at 24 months. This is encouraging for that symptom and population; it is not an independent replication of the bone trial. 2
