What did the eye studies measure?
A small, unmasked trial analyzed 27 healthy adults aged 45–65. Participants consumed 28 g of berries or a lutein/zeaxanthin supplement five times weekly for 90 days. Macular pigment, a measure of protective pigments in the retina, increased at two measured locations in the berry group. The trial did not establish prevention of vision loss. 1
Pigment changes do not establish lasting protection against eye disease. 1
What about people with early macular degeneration?
A randomized study of 114 people with early age-related macular degeneration tested 25 g of berries daily for 90 days. Retinal pigment and blood zeaxanthin increased compared with the usual-diet control; visual acuity also improved from baseline in the berry group. Longer follow-up is needed to determine whether disease progression changes. 2
