Silicon
Silicon is a dietary element whose biological role is still incompletely understood. It is found in grains, vegetables, beer and drinking water.
Can it improve skin texture?
In a placebo-controlled trial, 50 women with sun-damaged skin received choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid for 20 weeks. Some skin-roughness measurements improved relative to placebo. Hair and nail brittleness improved against baseline, a weaker comparison. 1
A small, formulation-specific trial provides an encouraging signal. 1
What happened in the knee trial?
A 12-week trial randomized 211 people with knee osteoarthritis; 166 entered the analysis. Overall, choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid did not outperform placebo. A prespecified male subgroup improved in stiffness and physical function, whereas women did not. 2
