Appetite & Cravings
More hunger, cravings, or a loss of control while eating? This guide looks at what each question means and what supplement studies can tell us.
When is increased appetite worth checking?
An unusually strong desire to eat may be intermittent or persistent and does not always cause weight gain. Unexplained, persistent appetite increases or accompanying unexplained symptoms warrant a medical review. 1
What can increase appetite?
Possible causes include anxiety, some medicines, diabetes, overactive thyroid, low blood glucose, and premenstrual symptoms. Assessment considers eating habits, medication changes, and symptoms such as thirst or frequent urination. 1
When does eating feel out of control?
Eating a large amount in a short time while feeling unable to control eating is a binge episode. Recurrent episodes can indicate binge eating disorder; assessment looks at eating patterns and psychological symptoms. 2
What do appetite studies actually measure?
The protein trial reviewed here measured hunger and fullness ratings after a test drink and tracked energy intake. The saffron trial measured food craving over weeks. These outcomes answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable proof of weight loss. 3 4

This section reviews fiber, whey protein, and saffron; it does not evaluate the remaining listed ingredients.
A 2019 systematic review found differing effects across fibers and food preparations. Some guar gum and other fiber interventions reduced subsequent energy intake, but study bias was high. These short-term meal studies provide limited evidence for managing persistent cravings. 5
In a trial where each participant tried both drinks, 15 younger and 15 older healthy men received breakfast drinks containing 40 g of whey or pea protein. Protein source did not change food intake; the study does not establish whey as superior to pea protein or prove long-term craving control. 3
What is useful beyond supplements?
DGE lists whole grains, legumes, vegetables, fruit, nuts, and seeds as fiber sources. Its adult guideline is at least 30 g of total fiber daily, not a supplement dose. Large sudden increases can cause bloating or abdominal pain; gradual increases and adequate fluid intake improve tolerability. 6
What if binge eating is the main problem?
Binge eating disorder has treatments including talk therapy, behavioral treatment, and medication. A nutrition professional trained in disordered eating can help establish healthier eating patterns. 2
Questions people ask
Does strong hunger always mean weight gain?
No. Increased appetite does not inevitably result in weight gain, and its cause matters. 1
Is whey better than pea protein for appetite?
The small crossover study found comparable overall effects and no difference in food intake by protein source. 3
Does saffron stop cravings?
The reviewed 12-week trial found no significant benefit for food cravings in overweight women with depression. 4
Do all fiber supplements have the same effect?
No. The review found that effects varied by fiber type and how it was incorporated into meals. 5
What if I repeatedly lose control while eating?
That pattern deserves assessment for binge eating disorder. Effective care can include psychological and nutritional support. 2
