Pea Protein
Pea protein is protein extracted and concentrated from peas, used in powders and other foods.
Can it support muscle gains?
A 12-week trial assigned 161 young men to pea protein, whey, or placebo alongside resistance training, using 25 g twice daily. Muscle thickness increased, but the overall between-group comparison was not significant. A weaker-at-baseline subgroup gained more thickness with pea protein than placebo; strength gains did not differ between groups. 1
Does it reduce soreness or muscle damage?
In 92 nonathletic men, a five-day trial after exercise emphasizing muscle lengthening under load compared pea protein, whey, and water. Pea protein did not significantly reduce muscle-damage markers versus water; the difference between pea and whey was also not significant. Neither protein significantly improved soreness or fitness-test performance versus water. The studied amount was 0.9 g/kg daily in three doses. 2
This short trial does not establish a recovery advantage for pea protein. 2
Does it have a special weight-loss effect?
A crossover study in 30 younger and older men compared breakfasts containing 40 g of pea or whey protein. Protein source did not alter food intake or energy expenditure. This short meal study did not test long-term weight loss. 3
The acute comparison cannot establish a lasting weight-loss benefit. 3
