Urolithin A
Urolithin A is a compound that gut bacteria make from ellagitannins in foods such as pomegranates, walnuts and berries.
An endurance signal, with an important negative result
In 66 adults aged 65–90, 1,000 mg daily for four months improved repeated hand and leg contractions at two months versus placebo. However, the main outcomes, six-minute walking distance and maximal muscle energy production, did not improve significantly versus placebo. The study had manufacturer involvement. 1
What does mitochondrial research mean?
Mitochondria help cells produce usable energy. Urolithin A is studied for mitophagy, the removal of damaged mitochondria, with encouraging animal findings and changes in human molecular markers. Such changes are research clues, not measurements of longer human life. 1 2
