Endurance and stamina

This page reviews sustained exercise performance and selected supplements.

What does better stamina mean?

Running a set distance faster and exercising longer before exhaustion answer different questions. EFSA distinguishes performance in a defined task from the capacity to keep going until fatigue. Exercise type, intensity and fitness level belong in the interpretation, rather than being details to overlook. 1

How is endurance measured?

Trials use time trials and time-to-exhaustion tests. Adequate food and hydration underpin performance. 2

When is low stamina a medical concern?

Poor sleep, stress and illness can cause tiredness. Unexplained fatigue lasting weeks or disrupting daily life warrants medical assessment. 3

Which supplements have useful evidence?

Results depend on the activity and population. 2

BeetrootMixed

Trials suggest some benefit, particularly in recreationally active people; results conflict. 2

CreatineNot supported

Benefits mainly concern brief, intense efforts, with little value for endurance sport. 2

CaffeineSupported

EFSA found improved endurance capacity in habitual users studied after caffeine withdrawal, with at least 3 mg/kg at least an hour before exercise. That is a research condition, not a personal dosing plan. 1

What matters before a supplement?

DGE places a diet suited to the athlete’s needs at the foundation of performance. Meeting energy, carbohydrate, fluid and electrolyte needs, and correcting proven deficiencies, are distinct from adding a product advertised as a performance enhancer. A supplement cannot stand in for that foundation. 4

Why does product quality matter?

The DGE position paper describes health risks and unintended violations of anti-doping rules. Only a few advertised performance ingredients have sufficiently established benefits. The useful question is therefore whether a particular ingredient addresses the athlete’s actual needs, with its risks taken into account. 4

Questions people ask

Does creatine improve endurance?

It has little value for endurance sports. 2

Do amino acids help?

Evidence for endurance benefits from branched-chain amino acids is limited. 2

What should come first?

Adequate food and hydration provide the foundation; DGE recommends evaluating supplements within a diet suited to the athlete’s needs. 4

When should I seek advice?

When unexplained tiredness persists for weeks or affects daily life. 3
