What part of ginger is used?

Ginger is the underground stem, or rhizome, of Zingiber officinale. It is used as a spice and in health products. Its constituents include gingerols and shogaols; their concentrations vary with growing, harvesting and processing conditions. A gram of one preparation therefore need not have the same composition as a gram of another. 1 2

How might ginger affect digestion?

Small human studies suggest that ginger can accelerate gastric emptying, the movement of food out of the stomach. However, a study in functional dyspepsia found faster emptying without improvement in gastrointestinal symptoms. A measurable physiological effect is not necessarily a benefit the person feels. 2
