A promising glucose signal in a small group
A 12-week trial in 24 adults with untreated type 2 diabetes found better blood-glucose measurements with 6 g of jiaogulan tea daily than with placebo tea. Both groups received diet and exercise guidance. A separate small trial found additional glucose lowering when an extract was added to gliclazide. These findings support further clinical testing, not self-directed replacement of diabetes care. 1 2
Small diabetes trials found improved glucose control; applicability beyond those patients is uncertain. 1 2
Cholesterol findings need a careful comparison
A review of 22 trials found possible benefits when jiaogulan was added to lipid-lowering treatment. Most trials had methodological concerns. Comparisons with medicines were too uncertain to establish equivalence, and LDL cholesterol outcomes favored statins or fenofibrate over jiaogulan. 3
Adjunctive results were encouraging, but quality and comparator differences limit conclusions. 3
One anxiety measure improved, others did not
In 72 otherwise healthy adults with chronic stress, 400 mg of leaf extract daily for eight weeks improved a measure of anxiety proneness. Several other anxiety scales and physiological measures did not differ significantly from placebo. This is a specific preliminary result, not evidence that jiaogulan treats an anxiety disorder. 4
