Does it sharpen attention?
A 2023 meta-analysis included eight placebo-controlled studies with 328 participants. Guarana slightly shortened response times, but did not improve accuracy; the combined result across cognitive measures was not significant. 1
Faster responses are a specific finding, not a general improvement in thinking. It remains unclear whether caffeine or other constituents explain the signal. 1
What happened in a newer comparison?
In a 2024 crossover study, 20 participants received guarana, caffeine and placebo on separate occasions. The guarana provided 130 mg caffeine, versus 100 mg in the caffeine-only condition. Neither improved cognitive performance, and mood benefits were inconsistent. The unequal caffeine amounts also limit a clean ingredient comparison. 2
