Apigenin
Apigenin is a plant flavonoid found in parsley, celery and chamomile, and is mostly studied for sleep.
Also listed as Biapigenin
What do the human sleep studies show?
A 2024 review of ten chamomile trials involving 772 adults found improved subjective sleep quality, with substantial variation. Sleep duration and daytime functioning did not improve. Chamomile contains multiple compounds, so this does not isolate apigenin’s effect. 1 2
Why the interest in aging?
In mice, apigenin can inhibit CD38, an enzyme that consumes NAD+, and raise NAD+ levels. Survival findings in flies and worms remain preclinical; they do not establish longer human life. 2
Who wrote the mechanistic review?
Both authors of the 2024 sleep-and-aging review were employees of Tally Health, which funded its publication fee. 2
