Protein
Protein is a macronutrient made of chains of amino acids, found in foods such as meat, fish, eggs, dairy, legumes and grains.
Does extra protein help strength training?
A meta-analysis of 49 studies involving 1,863 healthy adults found that supplementation during resistance training added an average 0.30 kg of fat-free mass and 2.49 kg to one-repetition maximum strength. These are additional gains during training, not results from powder alone. 1
Does more always mean more muscle?
The same analysis estimated a plateau near 1.6 g/kg/day total protein, with substantial uncertainty around that estimate. It is not a precise personal threshold. 1
What about weight and bones?
DGE reviews found little influence on body weight when energy intake met needs; conclusions during calorie restriction remain uncertain. Bone evidence is also inconclusive overall, while a possible reduction in hip fractures after age 65 deserves further study. Uncertainty leaves these questions open. 2
