Whey Protein
Whey protein comes from whey, the liquid left over in cheesemaking. It is a complete milk protein that supplies all essential amino acids.
Also listed as whey, whey concentrate, whey isolate, whey hydrolysate
Will it add to strength training?
A 2019 meta-analysis included 21 trials and 837 participants, with resistance training lasting about 13 weeks on average. Whey added a small improvement in strength; the findings were more favorable in healthy and younger participants. 1
This is an additional effect alongside training. The same analysis did not find a strength benefit in its subgroup with health conditions, so the average cannot simply be transferred to rehabilitation. 1
A small additional strength benefit appeared during resistance training, with differences between populations. 1
Does it help muscles recover?
A review of young, healthy participants found small to moderate pooled improvements in recovery of muscle function after resistance exercise. Yet only half of the individual studies reported a benefit. The evidence concerns measured function and does not promise that every workout will feel less sore. 2
Recovery of muscle function may improve, but the limited trials were inconsistent. 2
What about blood sugar?
A 2023 umbrella review brought together 13 reviews covering 109 unique trials. It found possible improvements in long-term blood sugar, insulin resistance and fasting insulin in people with overweight, obesity or metabolic risk. 3
Evidence was insufficient for glucose benefits in lower-risk people, or for choosing an optimal whey dose, duration or form. These findings do not establish a replacement for diabetes treatment. 3
Potential benefits are concentrated in groups with metabolic risk; results do not establish a universal preventive effect. 3
Is whey a weight-loss ingredient?
A 35-trial review found some favorable body-composition results, particularly alongside resistance exercise and reduced calorie intake. Results varied with the intervention and participants. 4
The broader umbrella review found no overall advantage for body weight, BMI or waist circumference. A change in body composition in selected training studies is therefore a different claim from reliable weight loss with whey. 3 4
Some body-composition findings are favorable, but a consistent weight-loss advantage is absent from the umbrella review. 3 4
