Coenzyme Q10
Coenzyme Q10 is a fat-soluble, vitamin-like compound the body makes itself. It sits in cell membranes and takes part in energy production in the mitochondria.
Also listed as coq10, co q10, ubiquinone, ubiquinol
Can it ease fatigue?
A 2022 review pooled 13 trials with 1,126 participants followed for 4–24 weeks. Fatigue improved overall, but results varied considerably across conditions, doses, and measurement scales. The healthy-participant subgroup did not show a statistically clear benefit. The review therefore offers a useful signal for fatigue research, not a dependable promise of more everyday energy. 1
The pooled benefit was clearer among participants with illness than in the smaller healthy subgroup. 1
Why heart failure is a separate conversation
Cochrane found that CoQ10 probably reduced deaths and heart-failure admissions, with evidence no better than moderate quality. A 2024 review of 33 studies also reported fewer deaths and admissions when CoQ10 was added to treatment. These are findings in diagnosed heart failure, not evidence that a supplement prevents heart disease in healthy people. 2 3
What about statin muscle pain?
NCCIH concludes that the overall evidence does not support CoQ10 for muscle pain caused by statins. Its summary also finds little evidence of a meaningful blood-pressure effect. A cellular mechanism alone cannot settle either clinical question. 4
The limited evidence summarized by NCCIH suggests little meaningful effect. 4
